The owners, an artist, a theatre instructor, 3 boys and 2 dogs, needed help making their large 70's style wood house feel more like their home. The existing house had very poor light, an inefficient floor plan, and extremely depressing finishes. Space was needed to house their extensive collection of books. An artist studio would also have to be provided. The house consisted of two large shed style volumes. OPA's solution was to make the library become the space between the sheds with a bridge overhead connecting second floor loft spaces. The additions were clad in metal and fiberglas, materials inspired by vernacular metal buildings yet detailed to match the sophistication of the existing "Sea Ranch" aesthetic.
Internal vistas were composed by layering and framing views with color. All existing lighing, cabinetry, closet doors, interior finishes, plumbing fixtures and most hardware was removed and redesigned to reinforce the continuity of the interior spaces. A massive brick fireplace was hand troweled with a smooth wax finish.Colors were carefully selected and tuned to enhance the quality of spaces and lighting in each room.
