kobe community shelters

A competition entry for "community living rooms" for the victims of the Kobe earthquake of 1995.

Although many were in temporary shelters, these communities lacked places to gather in large groups for the community functions that can restore a sense of neighborhood and shared purpose for the inhabitants of temporary shelters.

Funds were pledged for ten to twenty 1200sf structures, designed for prefabrication and air freight shipment via a pallet system.

The design is patterned after traditional Japanese living rooms. The units are shipped as a simple assembly kit, using stressed skin panels and trusses for the major structural pieces.

The instruction manual outlines twenty distinct steps for speed and ease of erection.

Citation, AIA/Seattle, 1995.
